In light of the EU's record-breaking € 4.3 billion antitrust fine against Google for its Android system, let's discuss what it means to compete with digital platform intermediaries in an online world.
This panel event, co-hosted by the Victorian Society for Computers and the Law (VSCL), will explore key online players and the markets in which they operate before delving into the competition law issues raised in the online space.
Topics up for discussion include: (a) data, algorithms and adtech as competition gamechangers; (b) consumer awareness and understanding of how digital platform intermediaries operate; and (c) the role and issues to be tackled by competition law and regulators when it comes to big tech.
The following panellists will be in attendance:
Professor Caron Beaton-Wells: Competition Lore podcast presenter tackling what it means to participate as a competitor, consumer or citizen in a digital economy and society, Director of the University of Melbourne Global Competition and Consumer Law Online Program as well as the Competition Law and Economics Network.
Robert Walker: Competition and Consumer Law Partner at Allens, and VSCL’s resident EU and competition economics go-to, well acquainted with working out of London and Brussels.
Rosannah Healy: Competition and Consumer Law Partner at Allens, co-author of the Cartel Regulation 2018 publication in Australia and a believer in the role of a competition lawyer as adviser never being eclipsed by technology.
Priyanka Nair: President of VSCL and in-house Technology and Data Lawyer at Vicinity Centres.
